I regret the kid I was back then. I know I’ve changed. I’ve taken classes on how to manage my anger. I’ve developed certain things I can say or do when I feel an episode coming on, things that can help calm me down. I guess, in a way, that’s kind of like brainwashing, huh? Brainwashing myself to not be such a shithead. I wish more than anything I could go back to that day and do everything differently. I’m still glad I was given the opportunity to be Gus’s friend, and to have been involved with the Manor, and I believe it’s a real goddamn shame for it to have ended the way it did. When we were all first starting out, nobody wanted this to be its legacy. How fucking sad would that have been? How goddamn pathetic?

What happened with that girl was a tragedy. It was also an accident, plain and simple. My son was a good man. He made some mistakes in his life, but he always had the purest of intentions. He would have never seriously hurt anybody on purpose. I know this with all my heart. My son was not responsible for that girl’s death.

After watching some of those videos on YouTube, I can’t say I was surprised when I heard the news. Disappointed, yes, but not surprised. Something like that was bound to happen sooner or later. I’m just relieved Charlie and me were long gone before things truly got out of hand. In those final months of our marriage, there was a certain type of look in Gus’s eyes that spooked me. Was this the man I had married? The man I thought I’d fallen in love with? If so, what did that say about me, then? How could I have let someone like that trick me into believing they weren’t really a monster?
